Fence Permit Requirements in Cleburne, TX

Based on City of Cleburne published sources. Confirm with Building Services before you build.

Do you need a permit?

Only for tall fences. Cleburne's residential fencing standards say all fences over 6 feet in height require a permit. Fences 6 feet or under don't need one but must still follow the city's fence rules.

What to know

  • Front-yard fences are limited to 3 feet at the property line and within sight visibility triangles, and can otherwise be 4 feet tall.
  • Front-yard fences must be at least 50% transparent.
  • Avoid corrugated metal panels, plastic (other than mold-resistant vinyl) and dangerous materials such as razor wire, broken glass or loose nails.
  • A new fence can't run parallel to an existing one unless there's at least 10 feet between them; otherwise it may go on the shared property line.
  • Rear or side fences that extend along the front yard of a neighboring lot must be set back at least 10 feet from the street property line.
  • The rules come from Section 155.3.08.B of the zoning ordinance.

Typical documents

  • For fences over 6 feet: a scaled site plan showing fence location, height and materials

Who can apply & how

  • Permits are issued by the City of Cleburne Building Services division at the new Municipal Building, 407 N. Main St., and applied for through the city's online permitting system, where you also pay fees and schedule inspections.
  • Contractors register with the city through the same online system.
  • The city requires all submitted drawings to be scaled and of professional quality.

Practical tips

  • Call 811 before digging post holes.
  • HOAs often have stricter fence rules than the city.
