Fence Permit Requirements in Killeen, TX
Based on City of Killeen published sources. Confirm with Building Inspections before you build.
Do you need a permit?
Usually yes. Killeen requires a permit to build a new fence or to move, repair or replace a fence. Repairs with the same materials and no change in design or placement don't need one if they're 25 feet or less of fence in 12 months.
What to know
- The city's permit list says fences over 24 inches tall need a permit, as does changing materials (for example, wood posts to metal posts).
- Fee: $0.25 per linear foot, $70 minimum (per the city's fence FAQ; check the current fee schedule).
- Wood, PVC, stone, brick and metal panel fences: 4 feet max in front yards, 8 feet max on sides and rear.
- Chain-link: 4 feet max in front, 6 feet max on sides and rear. Wrought iron: 6 feet front, 8 feet sides and rear.
- The smooth, finished side must face a public street, with posts on the inside. Used or salvaged fencing materials are prohibited.
- Masonry, stone, rock and brick walls 4 feet or taller need engineer-stamped drawings.
Typical documents
- Fence height, materials and location
- Total linear footage (a property survey may be required)
Who can apply & how
- Permits are issued by the City of Killeen Building Inspections division and applied for online through the MGO Connect portal, where you also pay fees and schedule inspections.
- Contractors must be registered with the city. A homeowner can pull the permit for work they do with their own hands.
- As the property owner, it's your responsibility to make sure permits were obtained — don't assume the contractor handled it.
Practical tips
- Call 811 before digging post holes.
- HOAs often have stricter fence rules than the city.
