Patio Cover Permit Requirements in Midlothian, TX

Based on City of Midlothian published sources. Confirm with Building Inspections before you build.

Do you need a permit?

Check with the city. The City of Midlothian says building permits must be obtained before making any improvements or alterations to a property, and it lists patio covers and carports among the projects that need one. We couldn't find any size or height at which the city lets you skip a patio cover permit, so confirm with Building Inspections.

What to know

  • Patio covers and carports are listed by name on the city's Building Permits page.
  • Concrete flatwork, such as a new patio slab under the cover, also needs a permit.
  • Permit costs are set in the city's Master Fee Schedule.

Typical documents

  • Residential Accessory Structure Permit Application or General Building Permit Application
  • Site plan showing distances to property lines
  • Construction details showing posts, beams, roof and attachment to the house
