Do you need a permit?
Only for larger sheds. Alvarado's fee schedule and accessory structure application cover one-story storage buildings that exceed 200 square feet. Smaller sheds aren't on that list, but confirm with Building Safety.
What to know
- Permit fee: $0.30 per square foot (minimum $75) plus a $100 plan review fee.
- Sheds must be at least 5 feet from any property line and 6 feet from any other structure.
- Sheds may not encroach into utility or drainage easements. If someone else owns the property, include the owner's written permission.

- Permits are issued by the City of Alvarado Community Development Department – Building Safety, 104 W. College St.
- The homeowner, a contractor or an authorized agent can apply. All sub-contractors must be registered to work in Alvarado.
- Plans must meet the 2021 International Residential Code, the 2020 National Electrical Code and the zoning ordinance. The approved permit must be posted at the job site before work starts.
